BBCHS Football Loses Homecoming Heartbreaker

By Don Collins

BRADLEY, Illinois -- The Bradley-Bourbonnais High School varsity football team lost to Metea Valley High School on Friday (Sept. 28) by a final score of 28-21. The loss dropped the record to 2-4 on the season.

The Boilermakers started the game off well, scoring a touchdown on a five yard Dalton Boswell run with eight minutes left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead over the visitors. After Metea Valley tied the game at seven with 5:19 left in the first quarter, the Boilers would answer quickly scoring in less than two minutes. Tremaine Stone scored with 4:18 left in the first after a big run from Isaiah Nwokenkwo to make the score 14-7.

The score would remain the same until late in the second when Dalton Boswell would throw a touchdown pass to WR Jason Hartsfield with 2:37 left in the half. Boswell received the direct snap and Hartsfield made the catch after tipping the ball up to himself and coming down with it on the second attempt.

On the ensuing Metea Valley possession, they drove down the field and scored a touchdown with 20 seconds left to trim the lead to 21-14 heading into halftime.

The third quarter saw BBCHS and Metea Valley deadlocked with neither side scoring early on. A 75 yard run by the Mustangs set up a touchdown with 33 seconds left in the quarter that brought the lead down to one (21-20) due to a missed PAT.

A promising Boilermaker drive was ended with 7:15 left in the final frame after a fumble that was recovered by Metea Valley and on the ensuing drive, they scored on a 39 yard touchdown run to take a 28-20 lead after the two point conversion. BBCHS took over and had a turnover on downs with 2:20 left in the game.

The Boilers, needing a stop, would force a punt and receive the ball from their own 28 yard line with just over a minute remaining in the game. After QB Logan Meyer led the Boilermakers down the field with some key passing plays, the final offensive play of the game for the home team was a run play that was fumbled after Meyer and Nwokenkwo collided on the transfer with 30 seconds remaining. The fumble was recovered by Metea Valley and they would win by seven.
