BBCHS Drops Critical Third Set Against Homewood-Flossmoor

By Don Collins

BRADLEY, Illinois - The BBCHS varsity volleyball team lost to Homewood-Flossmoor on Thursday night (Sept. 20) in three sets. The Boilermakers won the first set (25-22) before losing the second set (25-14) to set up a decisive third set.

In the final set of the night, BBCHS jumped scored seven straight before the Vikings registered their first point. After HF used a flurry of points to tie the score at 9-9, the Boilermakers were outscored 16-7 to lose the set (25-16).

The Boilers only loss of the week dropped their season record to 12-5.

“It was a difficult night. I think that our girls have to buy in to both parts of the game. We talked about our blocking at the net. Some nights it’s really, really strong. It was super strong on Tuesday night and it was really not strong tonight.” -- Coach Kary Dowling on losing after being up seven in the third set.

Keeping the team mentally focused after a tough loss is paramount at this point in the season.

“The girls need to be able to get outside of that comfort zone a little bit. When things got tough for us, we relied on our safety. Middles always hit threes. Outside always hit the same sets. And they continue to not work. We have to be able to make those adjustments. Our girls are really strong, they are capable of hitting multiple sets, different positions,” Coach Dowling said.

  • Chloe Memenga had 9 kills to lead the Boilermakers.
  • Reece Brown led the team with 28 assists.
    • She led in service points with 14.
    • She also had a team-leading 5 aces
  • Gaetana Davis had a team-leading 2 blocks.
  • Gianna Basile registered 11 digs.

  • The Boilermakers are competing in the Rich East Invite this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 21-22).
