PROGRAMS OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Foreign Language Department currently offers dual credit through Kankakee Community College for students taking Spanish levels 4 and 5. The program allows these students the opportunity to receive college credit for FREE.

Students may join French Club or Spanish Club to participate in cultural experiences that increase interest in and understanding of the inhabitants of Spanish and French-speaking countries.

"My foreign language education at BBCHS is something that I've called upon in my college years as well as into my professional career. What I learned at BBCHS sparked interest in college to further develop my skills and those cumulative skills have paid off in spades throughout my career. Thank you Mr Fetterer and Mr. Myers!"

                            - Doug Chavez, Class of 1988

"It seems a lifetime ago that I stepped into Spanish 1 as a freshman with no more idea of the language than 'Hola' and, perhaps, 'queso.' I'd chosen to take Spanish because my father had taken it back in high school, too, though he had forgotten most of it. By the time I graduated, however, I had taken four years of Spanish and was in no danger of forgetting it. Now, ten years later, knowing a foreign language has been a powerful part of my life. I've traveled to Spain several times, the last time spending year in Barcelona and completing my bachelor's degree in Spanish. The year abroad gave me the opportunity to learn Spanish language and culture, as well as travel much of Europe. Professionally, I now find myself on the teaching end of foreign language as I teach English as a second language to adults in the community. I'm always looking for my next journey or adventure, and I know that that doorway I have to the rest of the world was opened by learning another language."

-Brandon Pyle, Class of 2003

"I would have never anticipated that my Spanish education from BBCHS would be so incredibly present in my college career. I was recently blessed with the amazing opportunity to travel to a small community in the Honduras and serve on a medical brigade, administering medicine, healthcare, and dental care to approximately seven-hundred people. On this trip, many of the lessons and foreign-language education I received directly from BBCHS quickly became a necessity as I was one of three on our brigade who spoke and understood both Spanish and English. I was able to discover what was wrong with the patients so we could administer both the proper medicine and healthcare. I also used my Spanish to teach children how to brush their teeth while inserting humor and personality into our conversation. The foreign-language department at BBCHS not only gave me the fundamental tools and education of Spanish, but also the confidence to use and apply it throughout the rest of my life and has made my world so much bigger. As I begin reflecting back on high school, learning a foreign-language from such passionate and wonderful teachers truly stands out as one of the highest gifts of my entire education thus far."
                                                            -Lizzie Rowland Class of 2010.

"I have benefited in many ways from taking a foreign language in high school. Especially now that I am continuing on and am working towards a minor in French! It gives me a new understanding and respect for other cultures. I feel that learning a foreign language can help a student become more well-rounded and knowledgable. Also, on some occasions my knowledge of the French culture or language comes in handy in other classes."

-Ms. Elly Luzeniecki, Class of 2010

"Taking a foreign language class in high school has benefited me in numerous ways. One being the fact that I received the opportunity to learn a totally different language that I never had a chance to use [before]. Another being that now that I took 2 years of French in high school, my understanding of a different language has opened my eyes to a field of speaking if I was to ever travel to France in the near future. The experience I received in French class was beyond any other.[...]Taking a foreign language class in high school gives you a wide span of learning and a better understanding of a culture [other] than ours. I recommend that you take an opportunity of a lifetime, and take a foreign language class!"

-Mr. David Morin, Class of 2010

"[Taking French] has opened me up to a different culture and have been able to communicate with people from France and Canada a lot easier. "

-Ms. Ashley Raymond, Class of 2011
